Welcome to the Liturgy Department at Apostolic Carmel Girls’ Secondary School, Nairobi!
The Liturgy Department at Apostolic Carmel Girls’ Secondary School plays a vital role in nurturing the spiritual and religious life of our school community. We are committed to fostering a deep sense of faith, compassion, and service among our students, staff, and families. Our department is dedicated to creating an environment where spiritual growth and moral development are integral to the educational experience.
Our Mission
The mission of the Liturgy Department is to promote and enhance the spiritual well-being of the school community through meaningful liturgical celebrations, spiritual guidance, and religious education. We strive to:
- Facilitate Worship: Organize and lead regular worship services, including daily prayers, weekly Masses, and special liturgical celebrations, to provide opportunities for communal prayer and reflection.
- Eucharistic Celebrations: We hold Eucharistic celebrations every Thursday and Sunday of the week, celebrated by the Parish priests or other visiting or invited priests. The Thursday Mass is held in the school Assembly Hall, while the Sunday Mass takes place at the Blessed Sacrament Parish church.
- Spiritual Formation: Offer programs and activities that encourage students to deepen their faith, understand their religious traditions, and develop a personal relationship with God.
- Moral Guidance: Provide moral and ethical guidance to help students navigate the challenges of life with integrity and compassion.
- Community Service: Promote a spirit of service and outreach, encouraging students to live out their faith through acts of charity and social justice.
Key Activities
Our Liturgy Department is involved in a variety of activities that support the spiritual and moral development of our school community:
- Liturgical Celebrations: Organize and facilitate various liturgical events, including Eucharistic celebrations, prayer services, and seasonal observances such as Advent, Lent, and Easter.
- Sacramental Preparation: Prepare students for the reception of sacraments such as First Holy Communion and Confirmation, providing catechesis and spiritual support.
- Retreats and Spiritual Programs: Coordinate retreats, spiritual talks, and workshops that offer students opportunities for reflection, renewal, and deeper spiritual engagement.
- Religious Education: Integrate religious education into the school curriculum, offering classes and discussions on theology, scripture, and the teachings of the Church.
- Community Outreach: Encourage students to participate in outreach projects and service activities that embody the values of compassion and justice, such as visiting the sick, assisting the needy, and supporting charitable initiatives.
What is “liturgy”? Why is it important?
This is a formulary according to which public religious worship, especially Christian worship is done.
It is a customary public worship done by a specific religious group according to its particular beliefs, customs and traditions.
The word liturgy comes from a Greek term meaning “public work or work done on behalf of the people.” Liturgy always referred to an organized community. A work, then, done by an individual or a group was a liturgy on behalf of the larger community. All the worshipers are expected to participate actively in each liturgy, for this is holy “work,” not entertainment or a spectator event. Every liturgical celebration is an action of Christ the High Priest and of his Mystical Body, which is the Church. It therefore requires the participation of the People of God in the work of God.
Liturgy is centered on the Holy Trinity. At every liturgy the action of worship is directed to the Father, from whom all blessings come, through the Son in the unity of the Holy Spirit. We praise the Father who first called us to be his people by sending us his Son as our Redeemer and giving us the Holy Spirit so that we can continue to gather, to remember what God has done for us, and to share in the blessings of salvation.
Through the liturgical celebrations of the Church, we participate in the Paschal Mystery of Christ, that is, his passing through death from this life into eternal glory, just as God enabled the people of ancient Israel to pass from slavery to freedom through the events narrated in the Book of Exodus (cf. Ex 11-13). The liturgies of the Church also help to teach us about Jesus Christ and the meaning of the mysteries we are celebrating.
A mystery is a reality that is both visible and hidden. Jesus Christ’s death and Resurrection become present to us and effective for us in the liturgical life of the Church. His death and Resurrection are hidden now in the eternity of God, but as Risen Lord and Head of the Church, Jesus Christ calls us to share in them through the liturgy of the Church, that is, by the visible gathering of the community for worship and remembrance of what God has done for us. It is the Holy Spirit, the source of the Church’s life, who draws us together through liturgical actions, the chief of which are the Sacraments. The term liturgy itself has a broader application than that of Sacrament, for it embraces all the official public prayer life of the Church, while the term Sacrament refers to a particular celebration of Christ’s salvific work.
Apostolic Carmel Girls’ School is a catholic school under the Archdiocese of Nairobi.
The Catholic Church is fundamentally liturgical and sacramental in its way of worship.
In celebration of the Liturgy, we rejoice and give thanks to God for what He has done for us in Jesus Christ
